New chemistry study findings have been reported from H. Zhang et al

2008 NOV 24 - (VerticalNews.com) -- "Hydroxylpropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) was introduced to the surface of magnetic nanoparticles in the presence of NH3 center dot H2O to synthesize magnetic HP-beta-CD composite nanoparticles, which were used as a carrier in magnetic targeted drug delivery. The composite nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, ICP-AES, TEM and VSM," scientists in Xian, People's Republic of China report.

"The results showed that the iron content in the composite nanoparticles was 55.4%. The range of size is 10-20 nm and the magnetization is 59.9 emu/g. The capacity of composite nanoparticles for doxorubicin adsorption is 87.8 mu g/mg after incubation for 72 h. The cumulative percentage of released doxorubicin in PBS buffer (pH=7.4) in 1, 4, 10 d were 35.5%, 49.3% and 76.5%, respectively," wrote H. Zhang and colleagues.

The researchers concluded: "Thus, the magnetic HP-beta-CD composite nanoparticles could be a potential carrier in the magnetic targeted drug delivery."

Zhang and colleagues published their study in Chinese Journal of Chemistry (Magnetic HP-beta-CD composite nanoparticle: Synthesis, characterization and application as a carrier of doxorubicin in vitro. Chinese Journal of Chemistry, 2008;26(9):1737-1740).
